Celebrating Transgender Awareness Week: Skye’s story

My name is Skye Lacy, I use they/them pronouns. I was introduced to Rotary through my father, who was introduced through his father. My dad is in Rotary Club of Ivanhoe, Australia. I myself have yet to settle down with one rotary club, preferring to
participate in many different events with different clubs. This means I have met many members of the Rotary family, every single one so far has been accepting and open to discussion about who I am and the LGBT+ community.

In 2018 I attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in district 9790, and it was a third eye opening experience. I met so many accepting individuals, the food was great and the content of the week was even better. There was definitely an LGBT+ presence and acceptance at RYLA that made me feel comfortable and that I was able to express who I was.

Due to my wonderful experience in 2018 I decided to become a RYLA supporter in 2019 and the experience be only got better! After talking to people on the RYLA committee a question regarding an individual’s pronouns was added to the RYLA expression of interest forum. These pronouns were then put into their name tag, which worn every day. This made me very excited as it instantly made the experience a much more welcoming time for everyone!

Over the course of the week I was able to have many educational and interesting conversations with a massive variety of people from all walks of life about pronouns and the LGBT+ community.

  • Celebrating Trans Awareness Week: Monica’s story

My wife and I moved to Queenstown, New Zealand in 2001. In an effort to get to know people, she joined Rotary. I ended up going to so many Rotary functions that I thought I had better join her in Rotary. So I joined in 2003. I became the Treasurer in 2004 and was the Shelterbox Champion for our club for many years. At one stage, our club held the world record for the most Shelteboxes purchased in one year by a single club.

I joined the board of Shelterbox New Zealand in around 2010 and was the president of Shelterbox New Zealand from 2012 to 2016.

My wife was the first female president of our club in 2007 and went on to be the second female District Governor of our District 9980 in 2011.

After much soul searching and vacillation, the environment seemed right and we decided it was time for me to come out as Monica.

We decided the date would be March 1st 2016. In advance of the date, I approached the president and the incoming president. The President said that if the members did not accept me, she would resign. Fortunately, she never had to make good on her threat. She agreed to read out a letter that I had written at the next meeting, which was a BBQ. We were not in attendance.

At the BBQ, when the letter was read out, it was first met with stunned silence and then a robust round of applause. Friends, I had confided in before coming out, were very nervous for me. Our part of the country is considered to be quite conservative and a little bit red-neck in places. Many of our Rotary members were retired farmers or had some connection to farming and were expected to be less than welcoming of my transition. This could not have been further from the truth. I was fully supported as a new female member and was even accepted as the next President elect.

I have never had any pushback, snide remarks, underhand comment etc during my time as a TG member or during my time as President.

Since my transition, my mantras have been: “Help make Transgender Normal” and “Go hard or go home!”. So, I have never turned down an opportunity to seek higher office, higher public profile or requests to speak to organisations. The attempted suicide rate amongst TG folk is 41%. That number is not people who have thought about suicide, that number is the number of people who have actually made an attempt. I want young TG people and closeted people to see that if the President of a Rotary Club can be an openly TG person then there is hope….suicide is not the only option.

Traditionally, when a TG person comes out, they lose 50% of their family and 50% of their friends. This is what leads to the isolation and depression; add dysphoria to the mix and that can finally lead to suicide attempts. Striving to make the world a more acceptable place for TG people is something that  I feel I owe the next generation. I don’t want them to start from the same place I did, with no role models, nothing to aspire to and feeling like a total freak. There is a saying “leave the campsite a better place than you found it”…I think all Rotarians understand that in a mainstream way…..we now just need to push the boundaries and expand the thinking! Rotary, as usual, will rise to the challenge! We are no longer dealing with your grandfather’s Rotary!

November 13 to 19 is Trans Awareness Week – a chance for everyone to stand up and be a trans ally, celebrate the trans and gender diverse community, and spread all-important awareness and education. This is a one-week celebration leading up to Transgender Day of Remembrance on Friday 20 November, which memorializes victims of transphobic violence.

On this important week Rotary stands with the trans and gender diverse communities to say we will not accept transphobia and we stand with trans and gender diverse communities on their path to inclusion. This is crucially important now more than ever when so many of our members and community may be feeling isolated and needing some extra support.

You can learn more about trans allyship, the significance of trans awareness week and download a range of digital resources on the Minus18 website.

Trans and gender diverse people are one of the most vulnerable groups at risk of poor health and wellbeing outcomes in Australia.  They are more likely to experience depression, discrimination, harassment, social isolation and humiliation compared to the general population.

Rotary values diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds and we commitment to ensuring a safe, welcoming and inclusive organisation for everyone. See the practical things you can do to increase your understanding and show respect.

Be an ally for transgender Rotary members and the trans community

The LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship has created a trans ally tip sheet to distribute at your club. GLADD recommends a range of actions we can take to be a trans ally, including:

    • Remember that you cannot tell if someone is transgender just by looking.
    • Don’t make assumptions about a transgender person’s sexual orientation.
    • Don’t ask a transgender person what their “real name” is.
    • Respect the terminology a transgender person uses to describe their identity.
    • Don’t ask about a transgender person’s genitals, surgical status, or sex life – if it’s inappropriate to ask a cisgender (non-trans) person, it’s inappropriate to ask a trans person.
    • Support all-gender public restrooms.
    • At meetings and events, set an inclusive tone by introducing people with their pronouns (“Hi, I’m Nick and I use he/him pronouns”) and avoiding gendered terms like “ladies and gentlemen”.
    • Put words into practice, attend TGD inclusion events and bring your fellow club members

Use preferred pronouns and learn about inclusive language

He/him? She/her?  They/them? Asking everyone to include their pronouns on name tags at club meetings and in email signatures. This signals support for the trans community and is a powerful education piece, helping people understand the importance of using individual’s preferred pronouns. It reduces the chances that people will mistakenly misgender someone who is trans or gender diverse. You can also check out this LGBTIQ inclusive language guide, by the Victorian Government in Australia.

Support and promote the LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship.

Global research has shown that employee pride network groups play a vital role in delivering workplace equality for LGBTQ+ people. In Rotary, the LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship is our pride network. The fellowship is dedicated to promoting global friendship, service and education, aiming to create an inclusive, understanding and welcoming community, fostering goodwill and peace, and realising a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for LGBTQ+ people.

‘I’ is for intersex, not invisible

While many of us recognise the “I” in LGBTIQ+, it seems fewer know what being intersex actually means. Read this informative article published about the Australian Intersex community.

    LGBT+ inclusion in Rotary

As I have started to share my ideas, opinions and stories about LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse, queer, and questioning) inclusion in Rotary, I have heard so many of our leaders say to me: “We’re a really decent club/district. We don’t have any bad people. So, we don’t have a problem. Right?”

I’ve also heard things like “why is Rotary doing something so political” and “there are no gay people in my community.”

These comments come from a space of ignorance and I always consider them a teaching moment. LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. But while diversity and inclusion have climbed the Rotary agenda over the past decade, many LGBTQ+ members continue to face discrimination, discomfort, and even danger in our clubs. When it comes to true inclusion, everyday interactions with peers and leaders matter as much as organisational policies or formal processes.

Here are a number of ways to make your club and Rotary as a whole more inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community:

    Start having conversations.

In order to understand the challenges that exist for LGBTQ+ people, leaders at all level (club, district, zone, and international) should stay connected to what it means to be LGBTQ+ in Rotary. This means:

Once you start having these conversations both internally and with the communities your club serves, you will see that there are gay people in every community, and maybe already in your club!

    Set a meaningful public example.

We need to do this to become more welcoming to LGBTQ+ communities.  This could include:

    • Small gestures like putting a rainbow flag at the bottom of your website, using the LGBT Fellowship’s rainbow heart logo on event flyers or using Rotary’s global statement on diversity, equity and inclusion to make a bold statement that we are accepting of everyone.
    • Asking everyone to include their preferred pronouns on name tags at club meetings and in email signatures. This signals support for the LGBTQ+ community and is a powerful education piece, helping people understand the importance of using individual’s preferred pronouns. It reduces the chances that people will mistakenly misgender someone who is trans or gender diverse.

Support projects that address key issues for LGBTQ+ communities.

As people of action, we do amazing work to improve communities and the world. When you are considering your next project why not target an issue like HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention, addressing mental health issues and homelessness in LGBTQ+ communities, or preventing violence towards LGBTQ+ people

Support and promote the LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship.

Global research has shown that employee pride network groups play a vital role in delivering workplace equality for LGBTQ+ people. In Rotary, the LGBT Rotarians and Friends Fellowship is our pride network. The fellowship is dedicated to promoting global friendship, service and education, aiming to create an inclusive, understanding and welcoming community, fostering goodwill and peace, and realising a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for LGBTQ+ people

Diversity, equity and inclusion is complex, and Rotary is making some great steps forward. We have started to address gender, generational and cultural diversity. There are still many other aspects for us to discuss including LGBTQ+, disability, indigenous people and others, and then also how these identities can intersect (for example, how someone can be both LGBTQ+ and disabled). I’m excited about our progress and encourage people to reach out to the LGBT Fellowship, leaders and district membership committees to continue the discussion.
